What is a music video?
A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery.
Different types of music videos
Performance based: this is a music video that doesn't relate to the lyrics but is actually a way that the artist has chosen to portray the music to the audience.
Narrative based: a music video that related to the actual lyrics of the song, a largely recognised example of this is Adeles Skyfall video, which contained some parts of the James Bond movie Skyfall.
Conceptual based: this is a music video based on one theme, for example, Ariana Grandes music video for "Break Free"is based around a theme of space and out of earth imagery.
A music video has the following functions:
- to engage the audience and ensure that they are part of the journey that the artist is going through, and almost become apart of the artists life.
- the practical function of actually selling the music, in the hope that if the audience enjoys the music they are more likely to enjoy the music and therefore buy it from iTunes or similar agencies.
- they portray the singing artist as actually a performer, that means the audience is able to relate with the artist on another level that motivates them to continue along the artists journey.
- the video gives the music that is produced another platform to be played on rather then live performance or a music file.
