Post 7 - YouGov Profiler

I researched into typical audiences that like a typical certain genre. I noticed that all of the target audiences have the same things in common with the artits inself. This implies for in order of our artists to be successful in the music industry we have to create a persona for him to seem relatable as this will boost his fan base. They'll see a quality in him that would cause to take an interest into our artist(s) that we end up creating.

7. YouGov Profiler

YouGov Profiler is a way of finding out the different target audiences of any artists or band or comapnies etc. There are different categories for the profiler such as Demographics, Lifestyle, Personality, Brand, Entertainment, Online & Media. Here you can really see what types of audiences these artists may target. Here are some examples I've researched. Lethal Bizzle, Olly Murs, Emeli Sande.

Post 3 - Function of a music video.

4. Andrew Goodwin's Theory

'Dancing in the Distraction Factory'

Andrew Goodwin believes that narrative analyses don't apply to pop videos.
Three reasons for the different narrative structure are:
  • Pop Videos are built around songs - often songs do not pose traditional narrative structures(normality-problem-resolution)
  • The pop video uses the singer both as narrator and as a character
  • The singer often looks directly at the camera - this is an extension of (music hall) performance and trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance.
Andrew Goodwin would say Pop videos rely on repetition, they often repeat images in the way the song repeats choruses or lines. Some videos are autonomous from the music they spring from. The visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning, Therefore it can be said that there are three types of relations between songs and videos:
  1. Illustration: this is where the video tells the story of the lyric. A good example of this is Moelogo - "My Sweetie"

Amplification: occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. A good example of this is Nico and Vinz - "Am I Wrong"

Disjuncture: This is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyric. A good example of this David Zowie - "House Every Weekend"

Some songs may be used for promotional uses. For example to promote a film. Songs that are written from a particular movie often incorporate images from that movie in the video. A good example would be Wiz Khalifa ft Charlie Puth - "See You Again" for the movie Fast and Furious 7.

3. Function of a music video

Function of a music video

What is a music video?

A music video is a visual representation of a song. It is usually accompanied by dancing and visual images perhaps interpreting the lyrics. However this is not always depending on what type of music video you wish to have.

Types of music video?

Narrative Based Video – This is a video that has a storyline relating to the lyrics usually used for films such as the song ‘Skyfall’ by Adele which is incorporated with the James Bond movie ‘Skyfall’.

Performance Based Video – This is where the artist/band performing the song to the camera or an audience.

Concept Based Video – These videos are often unusual as some may say. The video is based around one idea. However videos usually don’t consist of one concept.

Function of a music video/main purpose?

There a lot functions and purposes we may attach with a music video but its main purpose is to promote the single, the album the single is and, of course, the artist. In order to this, a music video has to:

·         Sell the song in a way that the audience can remember the song from the video.

·         Communicate a message to the audience.

·         Engaging the audience – try to gain publicity.

·         To provide the viewer with a better understanding of the song so they engage with it both visually and audibly – can be done by storytelling (narrative based video).

·         To entertain the viewer by highlighting the talents of the artist – dancing, singing, performing and physical appearance

So we can say that a music video helps to market the artist, their brand and their products as a visual aid to as wide an audience as possible.
