16. Copyright Clearance

Here is a reply after requesting copyright clearance, the label has generously sent us the song in which we are really pleased and grateful. Now we are ready to make our music video a success.

29. Story board

Newspaper they read: The Sun
What social media sites do they use: Snapchat, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Soundcloud and Spotify
What mode of transport do they use: Driving a Car

synergy (bilal)

The key element that we are going to use all through out our work is going to be the costumes as black and white, also going to be used in the digipak and website here is an example of some of our costumes as a draft:

In the ancillary part of the production we are going to use the same font across the digipak and the website. again staying within the monochrome theme that we have chosen.

I (Bilal) have personally chosen to use the London sky line to use the location as part of the synergy, and will find a black silhouette of the buildings.

Industry - Curtis Laurencin

Industry

Virgin records is a British Record label owned by the Universal Music Group that formed in 2013 and we think Melz x Joez should be signed by Virgin Emi Records. This is because they are one of the best records label in  the UK and they have the funds to allow to us to make the music videos how we want it to be.

Which other artists are also signed to this label?

Krept and Konan
Lethal Bizzle
Kanye West
Kanye West
Lethal Bizzle
Krept and Konan
Would your song be available for internet download only?
No, as we're signed to a well known record label we believe that our song can be purchased on  itunes and the Android Store.

Will you be signed to a major or independent label?
Our artists is quite similar to Krept and Konan so we feel like our artists should be signed up by the same record label as them.

Brand Image (BILAL)

We have been influence by the following artists:

- krept and konan
- wretch 32

This is some of their branding:

- we found that they have no specific brand but rather use their own identity as logo and imaging material.
- this is more of a trendy way artists brand themselves

This is the way that we have chosen to go use, we rather use the artists as the brand themselves then use a different form of branding separately
it keeps are product and artist current and with popular grime culture rather then having to spend most of a limited budget on the promotion and marketing of the duo.

Budget is another key factor that has limited the amount of branding that we have decided to use, most of the funds that we have access too are independent and are only re available if the investors make a profit.

Evaluation of Lip Sync Project

Common Shot types:
Close ups

Base tracks: A base track is when the music video is filmed in one angle/shot throughout the whole song in a location. Once you do it in a different angle in a different location filming the whole song again it will mean it is another base track. Music videos contain base tracks so that there isn't too much going and there is sense of repetitiveness.

In our lip sync video we used around 5 base tracks and chose to do the close ups and wide shots in order for the audience to familiarise with the artist since one function of a music video is to promote the artist and we believe having various close ups would achieve this.

The base tracks were used in different sequences and at times in rhythm and beat of the song. This enabled to give the lip sync project structure.

When using the markers in Premier Pro, I thought we done a good job. We were good at catching the rhythm of the song which helped us place the markers in the right place.

Weakness:
  • Last frame lasted too long - this was due to the fact we never had another shot to compliment it therefore we had to leave it as that. So in final music video we will make sure we will have a variety number of base tracks so our music video does not fall short.
  • Lip sync was not as precise at the beginning of the video but you know what they say, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
Strengths:
  • The prop we used (the sunglasses), matched the mood and tone of the song which implied not revealing emotion.
  • Overall a well executed lip sync project and video.

Intial Idea (pitch)

Initial Idea

We plan to follow Andrew Goodwin's theory and use several edits in our music video for example base tracks on key beats of the song. This will be done to make the audience feel like they're going on a journey when watching our music vid.

Our music video will have a narrative structure therefore the artist will be a narrator and a character as Andrew Goodwin highlights in his theory. So it will have a mixture of performance and narrative.

We will be choosing to do an illustration video as we feel the audience would benefit more from it and also understand and be captivated by the video. As we do not want a boring video or even worse, a video that does not make sense and leaves everyone confused. It will be more appealing to do so.
Here are some videos that have influenced our choices:

J HUS - CALLING ME

SCORCHER - NO ONE ELSE

BASHY FT WRETCH 32 & DaVinCHE - MALE PRIDE PART 2

S.A.S FT MARK ASARI - BY MYSELF

17. Song Choice/Original Video (pitch)

Song Choice

We chosen the song Want From Me by Kojo Funds as we thought we could conjure up a good video for that song. The song we chose is a remix of the song by another artist Sneakbo - Sneakbo ft Kojo Funds - Want From Me. Sneakbo is a well known artist in the grime genre/ UK rap and has done a few Hip-Hop and Afrobeat songs which is exactly the kind of genre we are looking for. The genre of the song is a mix between Afrobeats and pop making the genre Afropop which does exist. It also has a tendency to fall under Afrobeats.  This song has two vocals so there will be two vocalists/performers in the video that we will produce.

Here is a video of the original song Kojo Funds - Want From Me as there isn't a video for the remix which plays as advantage as we will not be influenced by a video to make same footage and allows us to come up with new ideas.

This is the artist and the video of the song. it was released on YouTube on 8th February and has around about 140,000 views and 1,500 likes. It was first released on soundcloud and got over 100k plays in its first week, leading to many remixes such as the one we will be performing.

Here is the audio for the song we will be doing Sneakbo ft Kojo Funds - Want From Me

It will differ from the video as the location won't be by the River Thames and we won't have the funds to film in a hotel.
Instead majority of the film will be filmed in a house and various locations up in central London to capture a romantic atmosphere but also a cunning twist as something happens which will be revealed in the video. Keep a lookout!

14. Reflection on Progress - Blogging Health Check 1

Well Well Well,
Compared to last year I'm by far more on schedule with my blogging, I just need to make sure I keep it consistent all the way through until the end. I've been given a mark 12/20 which I believe is a fair mark considering some blogs weren't complete. I've used various forms of ICT therefore my presentation skills have improved and I'm more in touch with my creative side then I was before. I've achieved a C grade for my blogs so far which I think its good as it tells me I'm on track to reaching my target grade which is a B and my personal target which is an A. So if I keep it up , I'm onto greatness.

8. Review of Student Video

Hi,
I thought I'd show a previous student video that I really liked. I have one favourite but there's also another video I will talk about since there was a feature in the video that I really liked and I think would a great idea if I incorporate it in groups video too.

This was my favourite from their choice of song, costume , location and video. It was really top notch!

11. Mainstream vs Independent

Hi,
Want to Know about Mainstream labels and Independent labels?
 Well look no further!

Reflection on Progress

How well do you feel you are progressing with your blogging compared to last year?
To be fair at the start of the term i had the same habit of leaving my blogs to the last minute which is not acceptable, so from now on i'm going to complete the blog post the day i get told to do them. However i must say that even though timing is an issue the quality of my work is quite detailed and it's evidently shows that I put a lot effort producing the blogs.

What mark out of 20 would you give yourself at this point for use of different ICT and level of detail in your blogging?
I would actually give myself at least a 14 because in majority of my blogs I use different presentation softwares.

13. Synergy Analysis

Hi,
This is about analysing the synergy created in the branding of an artist/artists across different media products. Here is a few examples of how a range of artists create a synergy across a range of media.

1. Artist - Wretch 32

Key Features Highlighted: The black and white is omnipresent throughout the video through clothing and writing and you could even say the people. This reflects the album as the name of the album is 'Black and White'. We also see the same image of Wretch 32 which is displayed on the album in the video - Haircut etc. The title of the album actually comes up in the video 'Life is... Black and White'.

2. Artist - Rita Ora

Key Features Highlighted: The colour red and the glossy look is a predominant feature in both the album cover and music video. The font is in a lipstick font as shown also in the video. Its very Urban. We can tell that fashion is highly important and keeping a certain image.

3. Artist - J.Cole

Key Features Highlighted: The colour blue is omnipresent. The same image is represented as in his look in clothing and facial and hairstyle. We can see aspects of nature throughout.

Post 13 - Analysis of synergy

Powered by emaze

15.Shortlist of potential songs

Kojo Funds - Want from me?
Vianni - Money Making
Jay Silva - See me now
Big Tobz - Fine Dress
J Hus - Friendly

We chose the Grime genre mixed in with elements of Afro-Pop since we want to do something different than the typical. Also because it is the most familiar and we are able to relate with it the most, mainly because as a group it is the music that we listen to the most.
Practically it is the genre that is the easiest to make.

Evaluation of Lip Sync video:

What did we do well?

- grasped how to use the new editing software efficiently
- base tracks were in time with the beats of the sonf and the music
- the performance of the song was with the mood and tone of the music
- match cutting is well.

What can we improve?

- the lip sync, and how we can make sure it is on time with the lyrics and it flows looking natural.
- make sure the cutting isn't too long and actually meats the codes and conventions of  music videos identifies by Vernallis.

Laura Mulvey.

Laura Mulvey, studied the representation of women in music videos, she found that the world was sexually imbalanced and has been split between men and women, she found that men were generally portrayed to be more masculine and active, whereas the women are represented to be overly sexualised and more passive, almost a tool that is used to satisfy the needs of the man.

She described women as being gaze objects and are styled accordingly

For example the way that Nicki Minaj is portrayed in her "Super Bass" music video.

or the way that Beyonce performs "Partition" with JayZ

vernallis

Carol Vernallis, studied camera work in music videos. She saw that edits in music videos are a lot more frequent then in films; she found that this related directly to the rhythm of the music and used to portray a form of disjuncture.

Here are some of her main points:

-          Usual continuity editing is broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen

-          Edits may therefore be very obvious to draw attention to the artist, techniques such as wipes and special effects are added.

-          Jump cuts, slow motion, special effects high value props may be used in the video.

-          A base track, or sometimes referred to as a master shot is frequently used to give the video some form of structure.

here are some examples of her findings in recent music videos:
